5 Signs of Early Menopause

According to research, one in 100 women will begin menopause before age 40, known as early menopause. The average age a woman experiences menopause (marked by 12 straight months without a period) is 51, so when the symptoms begin showing up 10 to 15 years too soon, it can be confusing, frustrating and scary. Read on to learn more about the symptoms of early menopause - and what you can do if it happens to you.

1. Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are the most common and well known symptom of menopause. A hot flash is a sudden, intense feeling of warmth, often in the face, neck and chest. It can cause sweating followed by chills. Some common triggers of hot flashes during menopause include stress, caffeine, alcohol, tight clothes and cigarette smoke.

2. Irregular Periods

Changes in menstrual cycles can be confusing and sometimes alarming when they first begin as a result of menopause. Sometimes it can seem like a new period is starting just after the last one has finished, while other times you may go a few months with no period at all followed by an extremely heavy period.

3. Mood Swings

Changes in mood are extremely common during this transitional time in a woman's life. The most commonly reported mood concern is irritability, with 70 percent of women reporting it as their main emotional issue during menopause. Depression, anxiety, episodes of crying and insomnia are also common problems.

4. Vaginal Dryness

Research shows half of post-menopausal women suffer from vaginal dryness. One the biggest hormonal changes, the reduced production of estrogen, by the body during menopause can lead to a reduction in natural lubrication, along with thinner and less elastic vaginal walls.

5. Lack of Libido

Women are much more likely than men to experience a decrease in libido as they age, but it becomes even more of a problem when menopause occurs. This is due to declining estrogen levels, as well.
