5 Signs of Hormone Imbalance

Hormones, the body's messengers, are some of the most important regulators in the body. They can affect everything from metabolism to digestion and even sex drive. Perfectly balanced hormones require extremely complex processes in the body to work perfectly, and when they don't, things can start to get complicated quickly. Here are just a few of the many signs of a hormone imbalance.

1. Mood Swings

Estrogen, one of the hormones most affected by menopause, influences the body's production of serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for regulating mood. When things begin to fluctuate with estrogen and serotonin, it can wreak havoc on your emotional well-being.

2. Headaches

While headaches can certainly be caused by a variety of things, a decrease in the hormone estrogen can also be to blame. To determine if your headaches could be related to hormones, observe the timing of them. Do they occur just before or during your period?

3. Trouble Concentrating

Trouble concentrating or memory problems can occur for several reasons involving hormonal imbalances. Low levels of progesterone can make it hard to fall and stay asleep, leading to grogginess, trouble concentrating and fatigue during the day.

4. Irregular Periods

Periods that are shorter or longer than the average 21- to 35-day period cycle most women experience are said to be irregular. Amenorrhea refers to a lack of a period for three months or more, while oligomenorrhea is the term used for periods occurring less frequently than every 35 days.

5. Low Libido and Dryness

One of the most common causes of vaginal dryness is low levels of estrogen, a telltale sign of perimenopause. It can make sex uncomfortable and even painful. Even though testosterone is thought of as a male hormone, women and men both need it to regulate their sex drive. Studies have shown that increasing testosterone levels in women with low testosterone increases their sex drive.
