Can Stress Cause Hair Loss?

Americans are stressed. In fact, one Gallup poll determined that eight out of 10 Americans report feeling frequently or sometimes stressed in their daily lives. The two biggest contributors to high stress levels, according to participants in the study, were work and children.

So, does stress cause hair loss? Science says yes! In fact there are three types of hair loss commonly associated with high levels of stress:

Alopecia areata. This form of hair loss is caused by the body's immune system attacking the hair follicles.

Trichotillomania. This condition is an irresistible urge to pull out your own hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas.

Telogen effluvium. This hair loss condition causes hair follicles to revert to their resting state, and they may begin falling out suddenly or during normal hair care situations such as washing or brushing.

As with any medical condition, the first step is to find out the root cause of the problem and find ways to address it. If stress is causing your hair loss, it's essential to find ways to either lower your stress levels or better cope with the stressors in your life. Sometimes, therapy may be necessary to help find solutions to your stress.

After the emotional and psychological aspect of hair loss has been addressed, it may be time to look into physical solutions to the hair loss you have experienced. If it doesn't begin to grow back within a few months, you may decide to look into hair-replacement therapies. Dr. Foster has helped many of his patients using Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, hair-replacement treatment.

If you've experienced hair loss and are ready to make permanent changes, FUE treatment could be exactly what you are looking for. This hair-replacement therapy transfers healthy hair follicles from one area of your scalp to the sites of hair loss, such as along the temple or hairline. The new hair growth is permanent and can give you back that full head of hair you miss from your youth.
