Hair-Protecting Tips for Summer

It's many people's favorite time of the year — summertime! Break out the bathing suits, oversized sunglasses and giant beach towels because it's time to relax and soak up some rays (safely with sunscreen, of course!). Before you get too relaxed, make sure to read these tips on how to protect hair from the side effects of summer.

Tip #1

If you're hitting the pool, chlorine can really give your hair a hard time. It strips your hair of its natural oils and dries it out. If you don't want to wear a swim cap to protect it, make sure to rinse it with water thoroughly right after getting out of the pool. Even better: Wash and rinse it right after your swim. Be sure to use a leave-in condition for extra post-pool repair.

Tip #2

The sun beating down on your hair, especially if it's been dyed, is almost as bad as it is for your skin. Excessive sun exposure to your hair causes the outer, cuticle layer to break down, exposing the inner, more delicate portion of the hair. Try finding a cute sun hat or ball cap to wear to the beach and pool to protect your hair. (Don't forget to protect your hair anytime you're going to be outside for several hours in direct sunlight). If you hate hats, an alternative is a silicon serum or spray you can coat the hair with to protect it.

Tip #3

Heading to the beach? Saltwater can dehydrate and damage hair, especially if you get in the water and then let your hair dry full of saltwater as you lay on the beach. To avoid this problem, use leave-in condition before you get in the water to protect your tresses. Afterward, you should rinse your hair as well as you can and reapply the leave-in conditioner, or wash your hair completely if you have access to a shower after your swim.
