Could Hormones Be to Blame for Belly Fat?

It's the most frustrating part of getting healthy and losing weight, especially for women. Belly fat always seems to be the last to go no matter how hard you work out or how strict your health-conscious diet is. What many women don't realize is that sometimes hormones may be the cause of that extra layer on the stomach that won't seem to budge.

As we get older, our bodies stop producing as much estrogen and progesterone. We also usually become more sensitive to cortisol, the stress hormone, which actually causes us to store more fat, creating an even harder playing field in this game of lose and gain. This is often due to sleep problems caused by hot flashes or a byproduct of lower estrogen and progesterone levels. When one hormone is out of whack, it can create a domino effect.

Here are a few tips to help you burn the belly fat:

Skip the Alcohol

It's everyone's most dreaded advice, but it's incredibly important, especially for belly fat. The liquid calories, usually full of sugar, are a problem if you ever want to be able to see those abs you're working hard for in the gym.

Do More HIIT, or High-Intensity Interval Training

High-Intensity Interval Training allows you to burn more fat in a shorter amount of time by doing bursts of high-intensity exercises followed by a short recovery in between.

Remove Gluten and Dairy

You don't have to remove them forever, but try it for a few weeks and see how you feel. These are the two most common food intolerances, and they can increase inflammation and insulin resistance while raising levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.

De-Stress More

Storing fat, gaining weight and breaking down muscle are the favorite pastimes of cortisol, the stress hormone. Find ways to incorporate your favorite de-stressing activities into your life each day and you may be surprised what it does for not only your mood, but also your body.
